A synthetic diamond (also known as an artificial diamond, cultured diamond, or cultivated diamond) is diamond produced in a cubic press under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT), so is also widely known as HPHT diamond, Synthetic diamonds are made of the same material as natural diamonds—pure carbon, crystallized in isotropic 3D form. Synthetic diamond is also called the teeth of industrial, it is suitable for all kinds of work pieces except iron materials, is designed to cater for all application in sawing and drilling of stones and construction industries.
Synthetic Diamonds are synthesized by the reaction of graphite and other carbonaceous materials with some metals (alloys) under static ultra-high pressure (50-100kb, i.e. 5-10GPa) and high temperature (1100-3000 C). The typical crystalline states of diamonds are cubic (hexahedron), octahedron and hexahedron-octahedron, and their transition forms. With the development of high temperature and high pressure technology, the maximum size of synthetic single crystal diamond can reach 8 mm. By the 1970s, metal sintered polycrystalline diamond (PCD) was developed, and synthetic diamond materials have become the only substitute for natural single crystal diamond. Polycrystalline diamond is sintered by diamond powder and a small amount of binder under high temperature and pressure. It has the characteristics of high wear resistance, strong impact toughness, good thermal stability and compact and uniform structure. It is widely used in the manufacture of petroleum, geological drills, machine tools and gemstone processing.
